Product Description
Lumigan® Eye Drops are indicated to enhance the length and thickness of patient’s eyelashes. It contains bimatoprost, a substance that boosts fluid drainage from the eye.
Presentation/Quantity
Lumigan® is available in low-density polyethylene bottles of 5ml. This product is also commonly used as an alternative to Latisse® to enhance the eyelashes. You can purchase it as a bundle with 75 eyelash applicators or on its own.
Main Benefits
Lumigan® is indicated for the treatment of ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. Through its hypotensive actions, it effectively reduces elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), thereby decreasing the risk of visual field loss and optic nerve damage. Alternatively, this solution can help lengthen and thicken thinning eyelashes.
Ingredients
The ingredients of Lumigan® include bimatoprost, benzalkonium chloride, sodium phosphate, purified water, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, dibasic citric acid and sodium hydroxide.
Ingredient Information
Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analog derived from cloprostenol. Having hypotensive properties, bimatoprost mimics the actions of prostamides to increase the outflow of aqueous humor, thereby reducing intraocular pressure. Bimatoprost is able to stimulate both pressure-insensitive and pressure-sensitive pathways (respectively, uveoscleral routes and trabecular meshwork). The exact mechanism of action of bimatoprost is not fully understood. It is unclear whether it acts through the stimulation of prostamide receptors or F-Prostanoid receptors.
Functioning as buffers, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide keep this solution at its optimum pH.
Use Instructions
How do I use or apply Lumigan®?
It is recommended to apply 1 drop into the affected eye once every night. Patients should not use more than the prescribed amount, as frequent use of Lumigan® have been shown to decrease its efficacy. Remove contact lenses prior to administration. While tilting the head back, pull the lower eyelid down until a pouch is formed. Using the other hand, place the applicator tip over the eye. Instill the solution into the pouch. Then, close the eyes gently. Press on the inside corner of the eye for approximately 1 minute, and repeat these steps if the drop is placed incorrectly (outside of the affected eye). During administration, it is important that the tip does not come into contact with any surface, as this will prevent contamination. Always replace the cap after use. Patients should wait for at least 5 minutes before using other eye drops, and 15 minutes before putting in contact lenses.
To use as an eyelash enhancer, apply 1 drop to an eyelash applicator and administer to the upper lash line. The patient should dab any excess substance to avoid hair growth or pigmentation changes in other areas.
When should I use Lumigan®?
You should prescribe Lumigan® for your patients if they suffer from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), which is commonly associated with ocular hypertension and close angle glaucoma. Having potent IOP-reducing properties, this ocular preparation helps prevent glaucomatous field loss and optic nerve damage. For patients with thinning eyelashes, use this treatment to help lengthen and thicken the lashes.
What areas can I treat?
Lumigan® is intended for ophthalmic use only. Do not swallow or inject the solution. It may be harmful to do so.
How long do results last?
Patients should use Lumigan® exactly as directed for optimal results. For better results, it may be used concurrently with other ocular medicines.
How long does the treatment take?
In general, the effects of Lumigan® are noticeable 4 hours after the first application, with optimum effects reached in 8–12 hours.
